Preston Circus in the 1890's. The Hare & Hounds Public House on the right was originally built in the 1820's, (first licensee on record 1825) was re-fronted in about 1870. It was rebuilt in 1905. The same building that exists today. The photograph is dominated by the tower of Longhurst's Amber Ale Brewery built in 1881 for the Stanford Estate Trustee's by H.J. Lancaster. It was demolished in 1901 to enable enough space for tram lines to turn from Beaconsfield Road into Viaduct Road. A Cinema and fire station was later built on the site. In the distance, The Stanford Arms which still survives, now Circus Circus.
Longhurst's Amber Ale brewery built in 1881. The brewery later taken over by the Fry Mineral Water Co. was demolished in 1901.
